A 1,100 SF extension to Flatbread Pizza in Portland, Maine, was developed to attract the attention of water traffic right across a small “canal” shaped by the existing piers located right beside the building at the ferry terminal. At the same time, the new addition creates a space that is usable during all seasons by allowing visitors to take full advantage of the ocean views as well as having the experience of an open terrace in the warm weather months. The design concept is achieved by contrasting the old red corrugated metal skin of the existing building with a new, highly textured white skin for the addition, and by using a series of retractable doors and an operable roof system. The interior of the addition continues the interior design concept of natural reclaimed materials used in the existing dining areas of the restaurant.
